Not to sound lame and pretentious but KungFu films are fun, but nothing more, compared to the great Ninja, Chambara, Jidaigeki films out there, that are serious, and a lot of them state real happenings (period dramas) in the times of Feudal Japan, with of course at times there own twist on ideas and events as well as characters added into the story/plot, some very classic films dating back to the 50's.
If one wants to delve that far into the culture beyond your average chop socky Hong Kong films!
Just take a look at Criterion's Samurai films for starters!
